quilted maple, led matrix, wiring board, code, digital image, custom circuit to interface MAX 7219
Every few minutes the led matrix appears through the wood and displays a self portrait, one pixel at a time. In total, approximately 1600 pixels of varying intensity are displayed.
The enclosure went through four prototype iterations. The final enclosure was made from two pieces of maple that were hogged out using a milling machine.
The led matrix is driven by a MAX7219 chip using the Wiring microcontroller. The digital image used for the animation was converted to an array of pixel intensities using Processing. The electronics are powered by a 9v battery to eliminate any visible signs of electronics.
